The impact of neonicotinoid insecticides on insect pollinators is highly controversial. Previous studies have shown that bees become disoriented by this insecticides and don't find back in their hive. Now researchers report in a new study: The insects literally fly on neonicotinoids. The study shows that the honeybee does not avoid nectar-relevant concentrations of three of the most commonly used neonicotinoids, Imidacloprid (IMD), Thiamethoxam (TMX), and Clothianidin (CLO), in food. Moreover, bees of both species prefer to eat more of sucrose solutions laced with IMD or TMX than sucrose alone.

Is the Asian Giant Hornet a threat to the European honeybee population?
The Asian Giant Hornet (Vespa velutina) has extended its population in the whole area of Gipuzkoa (Spain) during the last years. The first colonies in Europe were detected in France in 2004, originated from a merchant ship from China.
Five hornets need only a few hours to terminate a beehive, which has no chance of defense. The raid is devastating. The hornets attack incoming bees, loaded with nectar, from above and cut off their head, wings and paws before devouring them. The wasps attack honeycombs to search for larvae of bees which they use as food. In this video it's possible to observe the events with spectacular precision.

Last week Small Hive Beetle confirmed in Italy in the Region of Calabria: the Italian Council for Research and Experimentation in Agriculture announced the finding of SHB - the small hive beetle (Aethina tumida) - in a nucleus hive used as "bait" in the town of Gioia Tauro in Sovereto, Region of Calabria in Southern Italy.
